Following is a summary of the requirements that US citizens must meet in order to be married in Canada. Please note that legal requirements can change so be sure to double check the requirements before finalizing your booking.

The bride or groom must apply in person to the Marriage license Issuer in their community or from a Marriage license Issuer (MLI) at any Registry Agent Office. Only one member of the couple needs to apply for the license, but you will be asked to provide identification for both the bride and the groom. Information required with identification will include: 1. Full name, including given names, 2. Birth date and birth place, 3. Marital status, 4. Current address. The license will be issued at the time of application, and is valid for three months from the time of issuance. If one or both of the intended parties was recently divorced (within the last 31 days), proof of divorce must be provided |

Proof of identification such as a Driver License, passport, or birth certificate. You also need to know the full names (maiden name) and birthplaces of your parents. Proof of the death of former spouse, divorce or annulment must be provided. All copies must be certified by the appropriate official in the judicial district where the divorce or annulment was granted. All copies must be certified. Both parties to the marriage must appear before the Issuer of Marriage licenses. You will each have a separate and private interview with the Issuer of Marriage Licenses. All information will be kept strictly confidential. If, for some reason, one party cannot appear in person, a personal attendance excused form must be completed by that person in the presence of a Commissioner of Oaths or Notary Public and filed with the issuer. You will have to complete and sign an "Affidavit on Application for a Marriage license". You will be asked to solemnly swear or affirm that the information on the application is true before you sign the form. |

Although only one person is required to apply in person, both parties to the marriage must sign the application and each must complete an affidavit and have their signatures witnessed on it by a Commissioner of Oaths, a Justice of the Peace, or a Notary Public. If the application is being completed outside of Newfoundland, signatures must be witnessed by a Notary Public. As well, if application is being made by only one party, that party must bring the ID for both parties. If divorced, you must present your original Decree Absolute or Certificate of Divorce. If you were divorced outside Canada, you will be required to provide a letter from a practicing Newfoundland Lawyer stating that you are eligible to marry in Newfoundland. |

However, if BOTH parties are not able to come in to obtain the Marriage license, one person may bring in the completed application form signed by both parties along with the two pieces of identification; Applicants must provide two pieces of ORIGINAL identification such as a Birth Certificate, Driver's license or a Passport. If a previous marriage was dissolved or annulled within Canada, the original or court certified copy of the Decree Absolute or Certificate of Divorce must be submitted. A divorce judgment is not acceptable. Certified copies may be obtained from the court which granted the divorce. Photocopies are not acceptable, and all documents will be returned. If a divorce was granted outside of Canada, additional forms must be completed. A death certificate is not required. |

In the event that the intended spouses cannot provide a birth certificate, they may submit a sworn statement, a passport and an ID photo. If one of them is divorced or a widow/widower, he/she must also provide a divorce certificate or a certified true copy of an absolute decree of divorce, signed by an authorised officer. |
