Catania
Serving as Sicily’s capital and the second largest city on the island, Catania is a city rich with art, churches, museums, and Roman ruins. Subject to Mount Etna's fickle volcanic temperament, much of the city was constructed and rebuilt from the black lava that poured down the mountain in 1693. Wander through the spacious boulevards and elegant piazzas to witness some of the finest Baroque architecture in the world, a hallmark of the city. Enjoy fresh seafood at the large fish market in Piazza Duomo, shop for authentic Sicilian goods along Via Etnea, head to the sandy beaches on the coast, or trek to the top of Mount Etna. Other must-see attractions include Piazza Stesicoro containing ruins of the Roman Amphitheatre, the 19th-century operahouse Teatro Massimo, and the city’s symbol—Fontana dell’Elefante.
