As the largest city on the eastern coast of Puerto Rico, Humacao is often referred to as the Pearl of the Orient. Visit Casa Roig Museum for contemporary art exhibitions, view exotic animals at the wildlife refuge, or learn about outer space at the Astronomical Observatory. Snack on a granito, a famous Humacao treat that draws Puerto Ricans from all over the country for a taste of this fried rice flour stuffed with cheese. Also, visitors can take a short boat ride to Cayo Santiago, a small, uninhabited island with over 1,200 Rhesus monkeys swinging through the trees. You can snorkel in this island’s shallow coral reefs, observe tropical marine life or explore a sunken barge.
