Innsbruck
If you are dazzled by the Alpine splendor of its setting, or delighted by the story-book charm of its arcaded Baroque streets, then it will probably not surprise you that Emperor Maximilian I chose to rule the Holy Roman Empire from Innsbruck. As a major crossroads for many centuries, and a capital for winter sports, it is also not surprising that it was twice chosen to host the Winter Olympics.
