The secluded beach town of Rincon, also commonly known as “the surfing town”, is one of Puerto Rico’s famous tourist destinations located on the western side of the island. Visitors come to enjoy surfing and snorkeling on the half dozen golden-sand beaches that face the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south. During the winter months, humpback whales frolic on the shores adding special charm to this scenic town. Additionally, a quick boat trip to nearby Desecheo Island provides the opportunity to go fishing, snorkeling, or diving. Rincon’s rich culture and history is reflected in such sites as the Punta Higuero Lighthouse, which was built by the Spaniards in the early 1890s, rebuilt after an earthquake in 1921, and still in use today.
