Siena
Located in Northern Italy about 40 miles south of Florence, Siena is a classic medieval hill town in the region of Tuscany. Many of Siena’s majestic buildings and Gothic artistic glories originate from between 1260 and 1348, when it was one of Europe’s wealthiest cities. The heart of Siena is its gorgeous 13th-century main square, the Piazza del Campo, which once housed the ancient Roman forum. The piazza is dominated by the red Palazzo Pubblico and its tower, Torre del Mangia, which provides visitors with a spectacular view of Siena and its surroundings. Another popular attraction amongst tourists is the Civic Museum, which hosts some of the greatest Sienese paintings. The piazza is also home to the famous Il Palio di Siena, a colorful horse race held twice each summer. In recent years, new boutiques, wine bars and restaurants have been sprinkled in among the city’s ancient treasures, so no matter your interest, Siena has something for everyone.
