Southampton
The port city of Southampton has a long and varied past ranging from flourishing medieval trade center to witness and victim of World War II’s merciless ravaging. Today it is a modern, vibrant city filled with museums, art galleries, and parks. Maritime Museum chronicles the city’s historical docks from 1838, including the ill-fated Titanic’s departure from the port. The Southampton City Art Gallery features an impressive selection of 20th century British art while the 800-year-old Bargate Monument sits in the city center and houses a contemporary art gallery. You’ll find rose gardens, elaborate fountains, and detailed sculptures at any of the city’s major parks that are ideal for tennis, croquet and cricket. Just outside of Southampton is New Forest National Park.
