Lanai City
Built by Jim Dole in 1922 to house plantation workers and their families, Lanai City was the first planned community in the islands. Almost all of Lanai's inhabitants live in the brightly painted houses of this quiet town, with the exception of a scattering of homes along the southeast coast. At an elevation of nearly 1600 feet, Lanai City is usually cool and misty, and clouds frequently obscure the tops of Munro's pines. These tall trees appear throughout the town, giving it the feel of a forest park.
