Waimea, discovered by Captain James Cook in 1778, is a well-known scenic point of interest on the beautiful island of Kauai. A visit to the breathtaking 10-mile-long Waimea Canyon is a must, as numerous lookouts and hiking trails offer terrific views of every aspect of this natural wonder. The canyon is protected by the Koke'e State Park, which encompasses 4,345 acres of land and has 45 miles of trails that run through the canyon and the nearby Alakai Swamp. Be sure to check out other local sites such as the Russian Fort at the Elizabeth State Historical Park and the working sugar mill in Kekaha.
